Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation Reflections

A site to share experiences of working in Occupational Therapy

“Best Practice”

Hi, Well I have not written for a while but I have a question and I hope you can help me. Our service is undergoing a review, particularly allied health staff members and the “big” managers are bench marking our service. We have a period where we can put submissions forward. I was wondering if anyone had research regarding why rehab is important, why allied health, particularly occupational therapists are crucial to rehab, both inpatient and community services. Basically I am asking for any research that supports rehabilitation, particularly with neurological conditions. I look forward to your comments and assistance with this.

  1. Hi Marie – thanks for visiting my site – this time of year makes it difficult to ‘keep up’ with all my electronic correspondence and blogging but I am entering the summer finally where time is a little more kind to me!

I look forward to perusing your site. As for your issue with evidence regarding occupational therapy and rehab I would refer you to the vast literature on the FIM. So many areas on the FIM are directly addressed by occupational therapy and no other rehab service. If a rehab manager wants to see FIM scores improve how will this happen without occupational therapy as a strong participating member of the team? I am certain that you could find many studies that correlate FIM socres to improved function and better outcomes for people who have participated in rehabilitation programs. Good luck!

  2. Hi everyone! I was very interested in your discussion since I was looking for evidence-based resources supporting this question. I looked at http://www.pubmed.org for the latest reports and did not find anything. I agree, that FIM could be the tool with pretty trustworthy reliability in your case. Good Luck!

  3. Have you seen the recent BMJ article on the value of OT and better outcomes for people with stroke? Would be worth following up and I can find the reference if you want it!

  4. Hi,
This post may not be in the right category???

I am a Masters of Occupational Therapy student and am undertaking a project exploring benefits and application of Yoga for post stroke clients. There is lot of research supporting the benefits of applying Yoga for various disabilities but there seems to be lack of literature on how to adapt Yoga for post stroke clients. I wish to evoke a discussion on how yoga is being adapted and applied with stroke clients and with what therapeutic gains.
I invite your participation in the discussion about Yoga and stroke at my blogsite, http://strokeofyoga.blogspot.com/. What is likely to emerge out of this is a real-time, practice-based information on the topic. So, please come and share your experiences, ideas, and suggestions about the topic and join in an open & healthy discussion with other like-interest practitioners.
Please share any information along the lines of what type of Yoga is used, how often, how is it adapted, which specific Yogic concepts are used, and how long it takes before the results are seen.
I project to start summarizing the blog site activities by May 15th 2009.
I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration. Your contribution is indispensable to the success of this undertaking and for future growth of knowledge in this area.
    Sincerely,
    Rashmi Bhatia, OTR/L

  5. I am trying to develop a protocol as I find when working privately I am being asked to use a variety of report formats …..and frameworks. For example just a report on Housekeeping benefits….but as I think a full In-home assessment needs to be done…..for example surely no one goes out and does an Attendant Care Assessment and just fills out the Form 1 and does not look at all the other parameters not covered by the Form 1…..Summary and a data base at least need to be reported.
